World’s Most Unique Places to Visit

Niagara Falls
When I get a chance to visit the north east coast, I’d love to make a stop at Niagara Falls. The falls can be accessed from both America and Canada, but my mom tells me the best view is probably from the Canadian side. The entire experience of Niagara Falls isn’t complete without taking a ride on the famous maid-of-the-mist boats!

Island of Socotra
The Island of Socotra is geographically isolated off the horn of the African continent. Although I probably won’t be able to visit this unique island in my lifetime, the otherworldly Dragon’s Blood Trees and other 700 extremely rare species of flora and fauna are endemic, found nowhere else on Earth.

Antarctic Glaciers
The coldest land mass in the world is also the least touched by human activity. Antarctica’s dramatic, white landscape, as well as the unique wildlife, make for an unforgettable journey. However, as the oceans around the continent grow warmer, Antarctica’s massive coastal glaciers are quickly melting into the sea.

Taktsang Monastery in the Kingdom of Bhutan
The Kingdom of Bhutan is the last remaining kingdom in Asia. Taktsang means “tiger’s lair” and hangs on a cliff high above the Paro valley. A trip to visit the monastery means climbing the slope on foot or by mule, something that would probably exhaust me in a couple of hours before I will ever reach the kingdom.

Dogon Village in Mali
The Dogon is an ethnic group that lives in Mali, Western Africa. The village is characterized by living structures of unusual architecture with pointed straw roofs used for storage of grains, food, clothes, jewelry and money.

Petra
Petra is the fabled rose red city and the earliest Nabataean city in south Jordan. The solid red sand stone buildings are unlike anything that I’ve have ever seen before. If I ever decide to travel to Jordan, then Petra is at the top of my priority list!

Grand Canyon in Arizona
The one mile deep Grand Canyon is a steep-sided gorge carved by the Colorado River in Arizona. The powerful sources that cause an impact on the Grand Canyon is erosion by wind and water. My mom has probably visited the Grand Canyon a handful of times already and I have yet to see the site for myself. Perhaps the next time I take a trip to Las Vegas I should plan a trip to see the canyon!

Machu Picchu
This mystical place is located at 2300 meters above sea level and is known as Peru’s great spot to divinity. People of Machu Picchu feel that they are the creators of god. This place offers you strange forces of nature that permit the individual to attain a contrary cosmic state.

The Great Wall of China
The Great Wall is one of the seven wonders of the world and the travel icon of China. It is also the only man-made object visible to the human eye from the moon! I got the chance to walk on the Great Wall in spring of 2006. It was truly a memorable experience!

Aurora Borealis
The Aurora Borealis, also known as Northern Lights, is the destination that’s highest on my list of places to see in my lifetime. Aurora is a luminous glow of the upper atmosphere which is caused by energetic particles that enter the atmosphere from above. The Aurora Borealis is at its most dazzling from December to March when nights are longest and the sky darkest.

Force Delete on Mac OS X

Comment On This Post

I had a couple of items stuck in my trash bin for about a week now. No matter how many times I tried to empty the trash bin or restart the computer, I got an error message saying the operation cannot be completed because the file was still in use! Do you have the same annoying issue?

Fear not! Because there is a way to force them to delete!

  1. Open the Terminal program. You can find this in the Utilities Folder.
  2. Type in  rm -r .Trash/ to empty out the trash bin.
  3. Close all apps and restart computer!

I hope this helps!

DST Workaround for Entourage on Mac OS X

Category: Web & Technology
Comment On This Post

Last week, we turned our clocks back for Daylight Savings Time (DST). The time change should be reflected automatically on all computers and laptops except for Mac users who are using Entourage 2004 and 2008 as their mail client.

I hadn’t notice this until I compared the time on my laptop to the time when I received an email. Strange to see that I received an email almost an hour before the actual time of the day! I felt like I was seeing into the future!

This happens as Entourage 2004 and 2008 use DST information from related ‘Timezones’ files which are not up to date with current information, even though the time change on the operating system is accurate. Microsoft has not released a fix for this issue but there is a workaround solution.

First, understand that this patch IS NOT SUPPORTED BY MICROSOFT.

With that said, only one of the support files is being replaced, the chances of lasting damage is minimal, but you are advised most strenuously to take a back up of the files that are to be changed.

If you accept this and want to continue, read on…

For Entourage 2004:

  1. Download the updated time zones file for Entourage 2004
  2. Quit Entourage (Entourage should not be running when you apply this workaround)
  3. Make a back up copy of your identity. How to find your identity.
  4. Back up the Timezones file in your /Microsoft Office 2004/Office folder
  5. Copy the Timezones file you downloaded to /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Office folder, replacing the old “Timezones” file
  6. Re-launch Entourage

For Entourage 2008:

  1. Download the updated time zones file for Entourage 2008
  2. Quit Entourage (Entourage should not be running when you apply this workaround)
  3. Make a back up copy of your identity. How to find your identity.
  4. Back up the Timezones.ics file in /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/EntourageCore.framework*/Versions/12/Resources/en.lproj/
  5. Copy the Timezones.ics you downloaded to /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/EntourageCore.framework*/Versions/12/Resources/en.lproj/ to replace the old “Timezones.ics” file
  6. Re-launch Entourage

*To access the contents of EntourageCore.framework, CTRL-click and select “Show Package Contents”

Photo Mosaics

Comment On This Post

Photo mosaics are pictures made from hundreds and thousands of tiny images. The small tile images can be seen close up, but at a distance, an entirely different image can be seen.

Robert Silvers is the creator of Photomosaic™ software technology. His company produces many of the famous photo mosaics you see in magazines, ads and posters today.

You can take just about any ordinary image and make a photo mosaic. Make sure you have a folder full of images, at least 100 or so, somewhere on your hard drive. These are the images you’ll use to build the photo mosaic. You may need more or less than 100 images for your mosaic but after you build one you can always add or remove images to get the best results.

Here are a few applications that you can use to make your own photo mosaic:
