How to Hide Newsstand on iOS5
I learned a new trick today! I’ve had my iPhone 4S for a almost week now and one of the first things I noticed with iOS5 is a new feature called Newsstand. What’s that you ask? Newsstand a special folder just for digital magazines and newspapers. It’s one of those features I’ll probably never use so I’ll just delete th… oh I can’t. Ok, I’ll just put it into another folder and… Nope! Can’t do that either! Well, guess what — if there’s a will, there’s a way!
The Coding Massacre has found a way to put Newsstand within a folder without having to jailbreak your iPhone. It appears that iOS5 has a little bug where there’s about a half second window of opportunity after the creation of a folder when you can sneak Newsstand in, if you’re quick enough. It requires some lightning fast fingers but if I can do it, I’m sure you can manage, too.
Here’s how to do it:
1. Position Newsstand next to two other apps.
2. Drag one app into another app to create a folder.
3. While the folder is being created, drag Newsstand into the folder.
Bam! You’ve got a new folder with Newsstand inside! It took me a couple of tries but it’s totally do-able, you just have to be quick enough.
This trick, however, has a catch. Newsstand not only becomes completely non-functional when tucked into another folder, it’ll crash your springboard and force your iPhone to reboot. Just remember that if you want to use Newsstand in the future, take it out of the folder first, and you’re good to go!
Special thanks to Mikey for the tip!
